Removal is where many gel manicures go wrong. Peeling or scraping gel off can take layers of the natural nail with it, leaving the surface rough and thin. A proper soak-off takes a little longer but leaves the nail ready for the next service. These steps work for most soak-off gel polishes; always check the brand's own removal instructions.
What you need

- Pure acetone or a gel remover recommended by your gel brand.
- Lint-free cotton pads or wipes, and foil squares or reusable soak-off clips.
- A cuticle pusher or orange wood stick, such as the cuticle pusher and spoon nail cleaner.
- Cuticle oil and a pair of gloves for the technician.
Step 1: Break the top coat seal
Gently file the shiny surface of the top coat until the whole nail looks dull. The top coat is designed to resist solvents, so acetone cannot get into the color layers until the seal is broken. Do not file down to the natural nail; you only need to remove the gloss. An e-file with a fine bit can speed this up for trained techs, but go lightly near the cuticle.
Step 2: Protect the skin
Acetone is very drying. Many techs apply a little cuticle oil or balm to the skin around the nail (not on the nail itself) before soaking to reduce dryness.
Step 3: Soak
Saturate a cotton pad with acetone, place it on the nail, and wrap it snugly with foil or a soak-off clip. Warmth helps the process, so a warm towel over the wrapped hand can speed things up. Most gel polishes loosen in about 10 to 15 minutes; thicker applications or glitter shades may need longer.
Work in a well-ventilated area and keep acetone away from heat sources and open flames.
Step 4: Lift gently
Remove one wrap and check the gel. It should look lifted, crinkled or flaky. Use the pusher at a low angle to slide the softened gel off, working from the cuticle toward the free edge. If the gel does not come away easily, rewrap that nail for a few more minutes rather than forcing it. Never pry or peel.
Step 5: Clean up and buff
Once all the gel is off, gently buff away any small remaining spots with a fine buffer. Wipe each nail to remove residue and dust.
Step 6: Rehydrate
Wash hands to remove acetone residue, then apply cuticle oil and massage it into the nail and surrounding skin. If you are reapplying gel right away, clean and dehydrate the nail first so the oil does not affect adhesion.
Removal mistakes to avoid
- Peeling or picking gel off. This is the most common cause of thin, weak-feeling nails after gel.
- Filing too aggressively. Remove the top coat shine, then let the acetone do the work.
- Not soaking long enough. Patience saves the nail surface. Rewrap stubborn nails.
- Skipping oil afterward. Acetone strips moisture; replacing it keeps the nail and skin comfortable.
Gel extensions, hard gel and dip
